Day 5

Day Five was an easy day for our midshipmen. After being wiped out from Marine Day, day five was a welcome reprieve. It started out with a moto run with the CO and the BNCO leading it. We went through an easy 3 mile run that we will run multiple times throughout the year.

After the run, they were let go for chow and to prepare their khaki’s for their first inspection. If they passed, they would not need to come back for a re-inspection. After the inspection, they took a knowledge test.

The day for many ended with a tour of the Student Success Center that houses many options that are available to students for academic help which includes writing aid and tutoring for many classes.

Day 4

Today introduced the new midshipmen to the ways of the Marine Corps. The Day started with a Medal of Honor run at 0540. The run consisted of a 1.5 mile loop around campus broken up by readings of past MOH citations.

After PT came chow and then the midshipmen were moved to Finger Lakes State Park to complete a circuit of six stations that introduced them to the Marine Corps life. The stations included MCMAP, cover/concealment, an Endurance Course, Leadership Reaction Courses, patroling classes (followed by an actual patrol). Overall the day went well and the midshipmen learned a lot about the Marine Corps way and will probably feel it even more in the morning.

Day 3

The day started at 0545 with their first standard PT. This consisted of three stations; pull ups, pushups and ammo can lifts. After completing a circuit, they ran a lap around Stankowski field and started over again.

After hygiene and chow, they went to the pistol range to not only shoot , but also learn the fundamentals of gun safety built upon the four gun safety rules. This took most of the morning and when they returned, Navy day kicked off.

Navy Day had the midshipman rotating through five stations that pertain to important aspects of Naval Life and had a brief and then practical portion. Two of the stations were Damage Control related; the first was firefighting and had the midshipmen working in teams to handle a fire hose and extinguish a “fire”, the second was flooding and had them patching a rupture in a pipe. Two other stations utilized simulators that we train on; the first was a flight simulator and had the midshipmen performing a carrier take-off and landing in an F-18, the second was ship driving and had them conning, driving, a USCG Cutter through the open water. The last station was Visit, Boarding, Search, and Seizure or VBSS and had the midshipmen practicing room clearing, deescalating a hostage situation and subduing an unruly sailor utilizing airsoft pistols and rubber M-16’s.

Day 2

Today started off not very bright and early at 0530 on Stankowski Field. The newest midshipmen ran through the Navy Physical Readiness Test. This consisted of as many curl-ups in two minutes that they could complete, as many push-ups in two minutes and then a timed 1.5 mile run. There is much room for improvement to be made, but we have more than enough time throughout the year to get them up to speed.

After they completed PT, they conducted hygiene, ate breakfast and came back to Crowder. Once back, they put on their khaki trousers and had a tailor take measurements to have them sewn and ready for Thursday’s and Friday’s khaki inspection. During this time we also conducted a urinalysis, the first of many during their time in the military.

After lunch they received a brief on Honor, Courage and Commitment from two of our enlisted Marine’s as well as a brief on the Navy and Marine Corps’ policy on drugs and alcohol.

They have gotten a lot of information thrown at them and today a knowledge test was given to them over their 11 general orders, the sailor’s creed, their chain of command and other questions from the briefs given to them throughout the day in order to gauge their level of knowledge.

Close order drill was instructed as it will form the cornerstone for movements during their time here and in their future careers. It can be confusing and somewhat hard at first, but with practice they will be marching in step in no time.

Tomorrow they will be headed to the firing range to learn how to safely handle a firearm as well as to shoot it. We will also put them through our Navy day activities to show them some aspects of Navy life and what is done in the Navy.

Day 1

Our first day has started out with our newest Midshipmen being taught the basics of NROTC life. They have been issued their uniforms as well as other items that will be with them throughout their entire time in the military.

Soon after, we moved to chow and they were introduced to dorm food. Thankfully, Gunnery Sergeant has multiple plans to ensure no one gains the infamous “Mizzou 22”.

We then moved to a Safety & Hydration brief followed by a Customs & Courtesies brief. The Safety & Hydrations brief covered exactly what it states. They learned about the Training Time Out (TTO) as well as how to tell if someone is suffering a heat casualty.

The Customs & Courtesies brief covered much information that will help the midshipmen with everyday interactions between officers, enlisted and other midshipmen. They also learned how to properly salute, write an email as well as entering officers’ quarters.

The day ended with a debriefing from their squad leaders about the next day’s activities. Tomorrow will prove to be a long but informational day as we are starting at 0530 with their first physical fitness test.

Welcome to the NSO 2011 blog! Throughout the week we will be updating with pictures that are taken during the day of our newest midshipmen. We will also add a small blurb about what they did during the day, if it was at the firing range, learning how to patch pipe, or how to effectively patrol. This will be an exciting and informative week for these future Navy and Marine Corps officers and we hope you enjoy seeing them as they progress.
